Translation of basic findings on the neural actions of alcohol into clinical applications (the ultimate goal of alcohol research) has been slowed down by the not always completely successful development of adequate animal models of alcoholism. This congress will review some of the most widely used and recently developed animal models for investigation of different aspects of the human disease. Ten highly qualified speakers will focus their talks on the translation from lab bench to bedside, suggesting ways in which this bridging can possibly be improved. A roundtable will gather top clinicians and preclinical investigators in the alcohol field to discuss what is missing in the most widely used animal models of alcoholism and how these models can be improved to better represent the human disease.
